March General Chapter Meeting

Saturday, March 23, 2013 7:56:00 PM

Out next chapter meeting will be Monday, March 25, at 6 PM.  We will take care of Chapter business for the first hour.  Some of the topics we will cover include:

  • *Skip the Plastic update
  • *Update on bills in Texas Legislature concerning beach access.
  • *Chapter membership drive
  • *Storm drain stenciling
  • *Earth Day/Bay Day activities
  • *Beach clean up

Adriana Leiva will be making a special presentation on marine debris at 7:00 PM.

Marine debris has become one of the most widespread pollution problems in the world’s ocean today. It is necessary that we begin to take a look at the different kinds of debris and try and find solutions at the source before they make it into our waterways. Cigarette butts, plastic bags, disposable kitchenware, fishing gear and balloons are items most commonly found on beach clean ups. Come join us for an introduction to marine debris so we can start thinking about possible solutions to make our beaches cleaner and healthier for us to enjoy.

The meeting is free and open to the public. Pizza & drinks will be served.

As usual, the meeting will be in the Natural Resources Bldg. Rm. 1003 on TAMUCC campus.   See you there!

Call to Action: Next City Council meeting Tuesday 2/19/2013

Sunday, February 10, 2013 6:29:00 PM

City Staff is going back to the City Council on Tuesday, February 19th, to make another report on plastic bags.  Unfortunately, they will only be able to recommend the same old voluntary public education and retailer reduction efforts, which are merely bandaids for the City's plastic bag problem.  Despite any efforts to educate retail staff and shoppers, the number of bags littering our city has not decreased.   Consumers won't change their behavior until they are urged to bring their own bags or pay a fee.

It's going to be up to us citizens to tell the Council and Staff that the status quo is not working.

Skip The Plastic team members have been meeting individually with City Council members on this, so we know that a majority of them actually support a bag fee.  What we need now is a mass of people showing up on the 19th, people like you and me, stepping up to the podium and telling them to overcome this inertia at the Staff level and do what we all know needs to happen.  This city needs a bag fee, period!

To see details on our main talking points, click here.

Even if you're not comfortable talking up at the podium, please come and sit with us to show your support and add to our numbers.  It DOES make a difference!  We need at least 30 people together to show that the people want action.  Fifty would be even better.  So, please, take some time off at lunch on the 19th and bring a friend or coworker with you.

  • Date: Tuesday, February 19
  • Time: Noon
  • Place: City Council chambers, 1st Floor, City Hall, 1201 Leopard Street
We really need you! Hope to see you there

Coastal Bend Chapter's Official Statement on Beach Access

"The Surfrider Coastal Bend Chapter is committed to free and unrestricted access for all people to all Texas beaches in accordance with the Texas Open Beaches Act. Surfrider maintains that vehicle access is the key to beaches remaining accessible and not becoming effectively private beaches. In certain cases the Surfrider Coastal Bend Chapter supports the creation of pedestrian areas as long as vehicle access and parking are maintained on the beach itself as it is the case in the IB Magee and Port Aransas Beach Parks."
